| What is Ashtanga? Is this a program, a technique, a kind of therapy? It is actually the first time I've heard of it. In what field does this term come from? |

Its a kind of yoga... In the USA it is often referred to as Power Yoga.
Since my first post I have actually taken it up and am really enjoying it. |

I've lived in yoga ashrams in India - and studied, taught and marketed yoga for many years.... so here goes...
Ashtanga is a very dynamic style of yoga - based on teachings of Pattabi Jois. It's a bit controversial because Jois lays claim to historical roots that are pretty bogus... but that's quite typical in India anyway. Also the focus is very physical and there quite a high number of injuries compared to other, more meditative styles.
The issue I find is that Ashtanga Yoga attracts A-type personalities... who actually would benefit much better from a slower, more precise style of yoga where there is less movement a more focus on alignment and the development of proprioception (awareness of the body).
I recommend all my clients to exercise - and try to get them to do yoga because:
i) It is a very well balanced exercise
ii) A focus on developing awareness of muscles and muscular tension
iii) A focus on the breath
iv) Deep, deep relaxation at the end of the physical exercise - and we all know the benefits of that.
v) Develops patience (esp. slower styles) and discipline and self-acceptance.
