There may be many schools of thought in response to this question, and its a good question.

In my opinion, dreaming sleep is generally random. Your unconscious mind takes information that it has acquired over the day, or a period of time, and using images, symbolism and various other methods, rearranges the information in an attempt to make sense of it. Other times, it may have nothing to do with making sense, and is merely - random.

Hypnosis is unrelated to sleep. It is more a state of heightened awareness. Whilst in a hypnotic state, the unconscious mind can be directed meaningfully according to a desired construct, and encouraged to accept direct and indirect suggestions to a new way of thinking or behaviour, or even to retrieve previously hidden information already contained in the memory - therefore it is the opposite of random.

I'm sure others will have more to add, though this is an initial response.
