This is one subject I've been deeply interested in for a long while due to some of the people I know who have this condition. Nowadays it's known as bipolar disorder, but I'm wondering, is it possible to be completely cured of this disease?

Hi,
It is widely excepted that bipolar disorder is not at present a curable disorder, however having said that it is in a lot of cases very treatable.
Talking and behavioral therapies have proved somewhat effective in mild cases, however meds are often the preferred route for sufferers at the moment. |

I'm not sure if it can be totally cured, i would think it would take alot of self help as well as mood stabilisers to keep full on manic depression at bay. I remember reading somewhere, if you have a second episode of manic depression then there is an 80% chance of further episodes.

Manic depression is indeed widespread. There is no cure for it as it is an imbalance in the neurotransmitters found in your brain. This is why for severe cases, drugs are needed. Without the drugs to regulate these neurotransmitters, the person slips back into manic depression.

What a great discovery it would be though wouldn't it. A good friend of mines mother suffered from this before she passed away. It was a struggle she dealt with for years and it was hard for her family to watch her suffer this.
