Alex Lenkei is a Hypnotherapist in West Sussex. He underwent a 83 minute operation without anaesthetic! He used Hypnosis and says that he took about 30 seconds to a minute to put himself into a trance.

To read more about Alex Lenkei and the operation please go to the BBC website.

Ok, guys this is a very interesting subject and we would like your comments.
Do you believe this is a good thing and should the NHS use more therapy like Hypnosis?

I think this was a really good thing to do, the world can see that hypnosis can work in situation like this.

My belief is that every hospital staff should use hypnosis, not just using hypnosis as anaesthetic but before and after a operation to speed up the recovery.

You might believe different but I honestly think this would be a great achievement in health care.

I too think that this could be a good way to go forward, we hear so often of people suffering adverse reactions or even dying under anaesthetic and this would definitely reduce the risk of serious problems occurring.
I must confess that I'd be extremely nervous of having a major op using this method but for minor surgery I reckon I'd give it a go, don't know if it would work on me though, I'm a self confessed control freak when I'm allowed to be Laughing

So, how much more control could you possibly have by teaching yourself not to feel extreme pain?

Surely, if you're a control freak, this is something you NEED TO LEARN!

This is a good idea, especially to those people who are allergic to anaesthetics. It's also scary though. What if something disturbs you, like a loud sound or something, and you accidentally break from the trance you put yourself in?

The hypnotic trance training will have put you into a state where you could expect anything. Loud noises would do nothing.

But in operations, just in case, there's an anaesthetist on hand anyway. Some hospitals now use hypnosis routinely, sometimes with a lower dose of anaesthetic.

I saw a documentary about this.

The one that I remember in particular was a Danish hospital. They tended to administer anaesthetic anyway, but the dose was (usually) significantly less than without the hypnosis.

That's a relief. I doubt hypnosis is already used in my country. My country is always late to catch on to new techniques. I do hope this would spread.

When I trained I heard of a guy that removed scrotal growths using hypnosis and a sedative. He done his work in the middle of the last century in India I think.

It will catch on only if two things happen:
  1. It saves money.
  2. People ask for it.

And I suppose if we have some concrete clinical research that shows evidence that every aspect is safe or safer that the alternative and that it is effective, this will certainly help...
