Fractionation can be excellent. You can also use it for rapport.
Is depth a myth? That depends on how you define it. If you look at the brainwaves involved, then "deeper" can mean "slower" - so, high alpha isn't as deep as low alpha, which in turn isn't as deep as high theta, and so on.
Certain changes seem to need theta (deep) whereas others only need alpha (shallow). Very few changes seem to happen in beta.

Hi Paddy,
You say that very few changes seem to happen in beta. I am interested to hear your views on what types of changes can occur in beta. |

There I go again, not being specific. Silly me.
What I meant was that I had observed few deeply-held belief changes occurring in a normal non-trance waking mode (beta).
I suspect that such change never actually happens in beta, because (afaik) belief changes need introspective thought, transderivational search, and integration, all of which cause you to go into trance. Only the justification for the change seems to come out at beta.

I define it most often by the measurement of brainwaves. However, it's not a terribly useful definition for hypnotherapy or NLP.
Generally, I don't worry about depth at all.

How do you personally measure this brainwaves? |

I don't. I leave that to the researchers.
I don't think that "depth" of trance is necessarily a useful concept for therapy.

So you think that hypnosis doesn't need depth to work? Is depth the measurement of trance? If so then what you are saying, is that trance doesn't always have to occur in hypnosis... Or have I got the wrong end of the stick? |

Well, as "depth" is poorly defined, that's really unanswerable.
But, it's not always necessary to have "deep" hypnosis, if by that you mean a semi-comatose state. Hypnosis isn't always done with eyes closed and in a relaxed state.

That depends on how you define "depth".

I think that trance always happens in hypnosis. In fact, NLP defines the two words the same.
But...
Define "trance"!
