I saw this on TV.
If I had a choice, assuming that the hypnosis worked for me, I'd definitely use hypnosis.
When younger, I hated the after-effects of the injections so much, that I self-hypnotised me (without any training, note!) and let the dentist do what he had to do.
He was a very bemused chap and couldn't understand how I just lay there, so calm and relaxed, while he did what he had to do.
I think he drilled a couple of extra holes just to see it in action again!
(These days, I just let them use anaesthetic. I think I'm not as brave as I used to be!)

Hi Paddy
I understand what you mean.
When I go to the dentist, I just remind myself of what a novocaine injection reaction is, and then divert the re-memory of sensations to where the dentist is working, and keep focussed on maintaining the sensations (or lack of ...)
Did you see the TV programme a year or so ago where they did a one-off special of a London Hypnotherapist working with a guy who ultimately received stomach surgery whilst hypnotised? I can't remember which channel, though I recall that Trisha Goddard hosted, I think? |

I saw that programme on Channel 4. The stomach surgery, if anything, was even more amazing than dental surgery. If you remember, the sceptic physician ("sceptic" used in a good sense) was stunned that the patient had had no nausea.

Certainly I do recall. I was 'mesmerised' - excuse the pun!
Shame there was no follow through on that and it remained a one-off. Certainly expounded the more dynamic side of hypnotherapy for a change instead of the clucking chicken which is so much more common! |
