When the CBS news show in America revealed that a good night Deep sleep is as important than food, many viewers were shocked.

| More important than food, probably not. I do believe that it's as important as food. Although I think that you can go longer without food than without sleep. After so many days of staying awake, your body begins to fall into REM stages without your control. You almost dream while you're awake, so to speak. |

I agree with mariata that sleep is just AS important as food but not MORE important. I think everyone needs to get a good combination of both....if you are getting more of one then the other you are not functioning at full capabilities, if that makes sense. |

Considering that sleep state is when your body goes into repair mode, then yes, of course it's important. I haven't seen any research on it, though I wonder how the body repair is affected when people work a shift system regularly and are continually altering their body-clock?
I remember being told, when studying for biological qualifications, that it has been observed that the repair cycle can be monitored almost by hourly time periods. The tutor said that in hospitals, the renal ward will experience most deaths at a different phase of the night than, say, the cardio ward, etc., and that there were found to be consistencies in this across many hospitals.
I don't know where they got their information from, yet it sounds interesting. |

| I would have to agree that it is as important as food. I know that I don't sleep well and it effect all facets of my life. Especially my energy level and my resistance to colds. |
