Hey all,
Just wondered if any of you had seen clients that experienced an hypnagogic jerk when going into trance? |

| I have never heard of this before? Is it some kind of reflex that happens in some cases? Curious to know also. |

| These jurks commonly happen when one is falling asleep. You have more than likily experinced one recently just as you were falling asleep. The body suddenly jurks as you get a sensation of falling. |

| Now that you've explained that you're right. I hate when this happens it is very annoying and gets my heart rate going every time. |

As an experiment, try to expect it and gently wait for it.
Then, when it happens, you can welcome it as a step closer towards a deep and healing sleep (instead of raising your heart rate).

Would you be able to do that while trying to sleep? Also can you consciously think while you are in hypnagogia where these hypnagogic experiences occur? |

Well, I don't think it helps you to "try" to sleep; that's too much of a conscious task. Just expect it and gently wait for it. That's easy to do while you fall asleep.

No. That's not the point. Allowing yourself to experience the state with expectation rather than surprise should change your response. These jerks no longer bother me when I fall asleep.
By the way, it is sometimes possible -- only with practice -- to add conscious control to hypnagogic states. I've done it, but it's quite tiring!

Hmm... It's some time since I did this.
A long time ago, I used to have two recurring nightmares, one of them to do with my fear of heights. I don't remember quite how I did it, but I determined to take control of those dreams. I was following some technique that I had read.
I would have a bad dream, become consciously aware that I had control, and "reverse" the dream. After some time, I would start to catch the dream half-way through, and later still, I would catch the dream as it started to go bad.
Eventually, when I solved my primary issues, the dreams went away and I stopped taking conscious control of my dreams.

Hi Paddy
Would this be the same or similar to the methods for Lucid Dreaming? |

Not personally, though I've possess some material in respect of learning the process as I'd like to understand it more, and how it may link into hypnosis. Although I recall someone warning me away from it years ago as a dangerous activity.
My initial understanding is that it's about being able to control your dreaming/daydreaming states more productively, which Paddy's comment sounded along similar lines to me.
I'm hoping to make some kind of study of the information soon to enlighten myself as to it's purpose and benefits/pitfalls.
So if anyone has any views or experience, I'd be interested to hear, as I'd like to draw attention to it in a thesis I'm drawing up. |
