On another (non-hypnosis) forum, there has been some discussion about whether it's useful to take client notes. (There was also a discussion about whether it's useful for a client to take notes, but I don't think that's appropriate for hypnosis.)

I'm curious how you hypnotherapists approach this topic.

I take notes as needed during the session, for example if I note something that will need attention later, but not yet. The notes tend to be brief and rare; I spend very little time writing.

After the session, however, I make full notes so that I can refer back to them at any time. The notes include progress, follow-up points, payment details, and what happened during the session.

My notes contain one very useful part: "Learning points". I'm a great believer that we never cease to learn, and so at the end of every single session I fill in this part, i.e. what I've learned during the session. It could be anything: How a client reacts to something new I've tried, a new reaction from a client that I've not noticed before, some problem with my own approach that needs fixing, a new insight I've had, or whatever. There's always something.

I'm sure that's the best way to be covering everything, Maybe the variable could be in the method of recording the notes.

I wonder if it would benifit the client if you were talking into a 'Dictaphone' in a very confident manor? You could drop alot of presuppositions if you wanted to? Then just do notes during the thrrapy work etc. Just use the dictaphone at the end of the session?

Hey, actually that's a good idea!

It really depends upon whether that thing will be referenced later or not. If yes then I try to cover each minute point and write it down. I write point wise - its a great method to even remember things. Its a good habbit to write things down.
