Personally when I read stories like this I think it is more a matter of will power than being hypnotized. I mean when it comes to illnesses like this a lot of the healing process can be manipulated mentally. If you think positive and have a positive outlook on life, and never think negative, odds are you are going to heal a little bit better. If that makes sense. The mind is a very powerful thing, and when it's used correctly I think it can do unsurmountable good that none of us even know about yet...

This is true. The mind is an underused tool.

However, if we're not careful, there is a danger of avoiding things that really do work. For example, if I get bilharzia (a potent disease from a part of the world where I grew up), I'm not going to rely on mind powers to cure it. I'll take the medicine, which is proven to work, every time, without significant side effects.

I have a question -- a rhetorical question -- to think about. When using mind powers (say, for cancer) and it works, then why has it worked? Is it because the mind is so powerful, in a mystical way? Is it because, by becoming more aware of our mind and body, we start to treat it better, for example with better diet and lower stress? Is it sheer coincidence, and we only hear about the cases where it worked and not where it didn't work?

I like this question. I think for one thing, what you're calling "mind powers" is what I call "a positive attitude." I hear stories daily about cancer patients and how the ones with good attitudes often (not always) get along better during their treatments.

For an answer... hmmm... well I'm inclined to fist say that yes, we start doing healthier things but when the cancer or other disease is already present, I don't think that makes a remarkable difference. So the good attitude helps with DEALING with it. A patient can, for example, decide to crawl into bed and only crawl out for their treatments, or they can say "I am going to BEAT this devil, by jiminy!" Attitude.

I believe that the mind can have a powerful effect on the actual workings of the body. After all our brains don't function outside of the rest of our bodies even though they control the 'higher' parts of our beings. Think about even when someone is so stressed out that their stomachs hurt or have frequent headaches and migraines, hair loss, etc.. The mind is widely accepted as having power over the body and that's why I believe hypnosis really could be great for cancer victims working toward recovery.
