I think so. It does depend on what the emotions stem from though. Hypnosis could uncover, or bring out issues which may require some counseling along the way. If this person has not had some experience with hypnosis, then, if you have, and are recommending this, it would be more beneficial for this person if you were there for support after the session ended to listen and support this person through change. Hypnosis does help people to change, and I would say that the changes for me have always been useful and productive changes which have encouraged me to continue. Personally, I have had emotional issues which I brought in with me in my use of hypnosis products. I am the better for it today. The biggest problem that I had when I began was with TRUST. I had to become willing to trust the process and let go of my old self, my old thinking etc. What I was surprised with out of my hypnosis sessions was the fact that hypnosis DID do what I expected it to do, and that I didn't really notice the changes until I began noticing that my old thinking and habits were no longer used by me when situations arose. I had changed kind of without me knowing-(like subconsciously). I was thrilled at the changes and the ease in which they came to me. As long as the hypnosis practices are a willing endeavor taken on with trust and openness to change, then, I can not imagine any harm. Smile

What about symptom substitution? I have treated several people who became clinically depressed after they were successfully hypnotized to stop smoking/lose weight. I know there were post-hypnotic suggestions about feeling well included in their treatments.

I often use guided imagery with my clients, but not hypnosis. When I was in nursing school, we had an obstetrician who used hypnosis to control pain in women in labor. It was like magic!
