Dear Members,
Here is how Wikipedia describes Psychotherapy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychotherapy
Has anyone else got any more points to add? Maybe you see Psychotherapy being something different and would like to share with us, in what way it is different? |

| I agree with the WikiPedia definition totally. I have my own definition for psychology though. I believe psychology is just a trick that plays with your mind. Bascially, it is a mind game that can improve or disapprove your mind. |

I just read the wikipedia entry. I'm somewhat confused. A psychologist can be a psychotherapist right. So can a psychologist pursue both careers at the same time?
Are the systems different? |

| If you put it that way, it can get quite confusing and it confused me for a second. Just think about a geologist, a person that studies the earth. Now a psychologist would be a person that studies psychology and the psychoterapist would be the "doctor" in psychology. |

"Doctors" in psychology? While we're making...comparisons (I'm sorry the appropriate term evades me right now) I see psychologists as botanists and psychotherapists as horticulturists more. |

Of course they can. Anyone can have more than one career, and they don't even have to be related. Have you ever come across a musician at night who works as, say, an accountant during the day?
A psychologist may well want to test his theories by practising psychotherapy.

As Richard explained in another post, psychology refers to the science of the mind. It uses hypotheses, theories, experiments, statistics. Psychotherapy is the application of the results of psychology to helping people change (for the better, unless you're a politician!).
