I don't know if that's the right term but I'm sure you know what I'm saying. So far I have heard of relationship coaches, career coaches, retirement coaches, weigh loss coaches and teen coaches.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of specialisations.

For example, one coach I know specialises in coaching teachers in state education within the UK. Another, whom I coached, specialises in people who have recently immigrated.

Some specialise in types of people, others in types of problems: For example, one coach specialises in people who struggle to sell their products.

Thanks for the clarification. I can have several different life coaches then. Smile This is a very interesting topic to me since I think I need a personal and career life coach.

Now here's an interesting thing. Suppose that your career is higher priority right now, and you find a career coach. If he or she is a good coach, you won't need a different coach for your personal issues.

Oh, you are right Paddy. I haven't thought of that. A career coach who helps me build a successful career can probably help me with my personal issues as well.

The terms career coach, life coach, performance coach etc are broad terms. There are not many "generalists" that can competently cover career issues (which are many) and relationship or marital challenges and behavioral change issues, etc.

It takes a broad base of experience and a lot of clients to build that experience to become a competent generalist.

A wise and competent coach is aware of what she or he can and cannot do proficiently. It also takes a good measure of self-worth for a coach to push the boundaries and take on a newer area and develop themselves, while protecting and putting the client first.
