Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

The solution to your problems is deep within your mind

Hypnosis is a trance like state, which is similar to sleep. You know how you can be deeply absorbed in something (like reading a book) and you don't hear someone calling your name? That's a bit like hypnosis. Hypnosis is not sleep.

A hypnotist induces (hypnotises) the subject, and his or her suggestions are easily accepted and commands carried out by the hypnotised person.

Hypnotherapy is hypnosis used for therapeutic purposes to relieve anxiety and also to improve or alter behaviour. Hypnosis is also popular in stage acts for entertainment purposes. Some people are more receptive to hypnosis than others.

In 1892, the British Medical Association (BMA) reported that hypnotism is frequently effective in relieving pain, enabling sleep, and alleviating many ailments like anxiety.

Hypnotherapy is a term to describe the use of hypnosis to treat illnesses of body and mind. Many hypnotherapists work to help people quit smoking and aid weight loss. Psychologists and psychiatrists use hypnosis for the treatment of phobias (unnatural fears), addictions, anxiety, depression, insomnia and various stress-related illness, and to control pain and to change bad habits.

Hypnotherapy is used to improve and change a person’s behaviour, emotions, attitudes and to remove dysfunctional habits. Hypnosis is also a tool for personal development and improvement. It can be used to relax and eliminate fears.

Hypnotism has been used widely in the fields of education, sports, physical therapy and rehabilitation, and, controversially, forensics and crime investigation.

All in all, hypnosis and hypnotherapy have fast being gaining respect in medical and psychological fields as a technique that has been delivering promising results for many conditions both medical and psychological.

EFT; Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

EFT — Relief from many troubles at your fingertips!

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a popular psychological alternative to other therapies. It is based on discoveries regarding the human body's subtle energies. It was founded by Gary Craig in mid 1990’s and has advanced and spread since then.

A popular EFT practitioner, Eric Robins MD, has stated that unresolved emotional issues are the main cause of 85% of all illnesses. EFT helps resolve these.

Usually, when a negative experience occurs, we feel negative emotions. According to EFT, these disrupt our body's energy system. To remove the negativity, the energy imbalance must be restored along with curing the negative emotions. This can be done through EFT.

The basic technique of EFT involves holding a disturbing or shocking memory or emotion in mind while tapping on a series of (usually) 12 specific points — meridians — on the body using fingers. Negative emotions are caused by disturbances in the body's energy field and tapping on the meridians while thinking of a negative emotion alters the body's energy field, restoring the balance and health. Advanced EFT includes some NLP.

EFT has proven successful in treating many clinical cases. It can be used to alleviate or relieve many psychological and psychosomatic physical disorders and problems, such as depression, anxiety, stress, addiction, unnatural fears, eating disorders and many more.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) — The Science of Better Living

Richard Bandler and John Grinder first developed Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). It has grown through contributions by many psychologists, authors and experts. It works by changing the way a person uses the brain. Its most common use is as a complementary form of psychological therapy. Other uses include improving a person’s self-esteem, positive outlook, communication and relationship skills, which enable them to live better lives.

As a therapy, it is a methodology concerned with the self development and the function of belief. It involves change in thoughts, perceptions and behaviour and is a set of techniques and strategies, which includes non-verbal communication, and the importance of “state of mind” to a person’s success. NLP sees the body and mind as comprising an interconnected system.

NLP has many principles. One is that there is a positive intention behind every behaviour. For example, people may overeat to “cure” boredom. Another principle is that there is something to learn in every failure. NLP emphasizes that people already have all the internal resources they need to succeed. Thus a person’s attitude is more important than reality or mental capacity.

NLP is taught and practised by experts through books, seminars, workshops and audio programs using exercises and principles intended to influence change in people. NLP is used in therapy and counselling, business communication, management training, executive coaching, teaching and motivational seminars.

Media and Hypnotherapy

What the Media Says About Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis, and especially Hypnotherapy, have been on the news more and more recently. Not only has there been new research, but also Hollywood celebrities have been using this successful process for various problems, such as confidence, smoking, and slimming down.

Here are a few comments from the media about hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

The Daily Mail (UK) – "A growing number of people have turned to hypnotherapy for relief from a number of illnesses, as well as for help in quitting smoking or sticking to a diet. Several small-scale trials have highlighted the potential benefits of using the technique to treat patients with IBS."

BBC News (UK) – "Hypnotherapy can help relieve severe chest pain not caused by a heart condition, research suggests."

New Scientist news service – "Hypnosis really changes your mind. Hypnosis is more than just a party trick, it measurably changes how the brain works. Clinical trials of therapeutic hypnosis are starting to confirm its potential benefits."

I was just pointing out that it's all about your perspective. We fool ourselves ("hypnotise" ourselves) into believing all sorts of crap, and confuse that for reality.

When I smoked:
  • I reminded myself of how disgusting smoking was. I didn't hold it "oh so elegantly" between two uplifted fingers (giving a rude twos-up sign to everyone while I smoked!). Instead, I held it as anyone would hold any stick. I didn't pretend any fancy.
  • I also reminded myself that, just as smoking dulled my feelings of stress, so it also dulled my feelings of enjoyment.
  • In the same manner, I never said anything nice about cigarettes. About the best I ever said was, "Well, it helps me with my current stress, but I will stop as soon as...
  • ... And I gave a target date. In my case, it was "as soon as I learn to blow smoke rings."

I found it very easy to stop. That didn't stop the withdrawal cravings or the occasional strong desire to smoke; I even had a couple of "mistakes" in the next few months. But, I had stopped. And I always remembered to be proud of myself and remind myself of all the good reasons.

I did it for me. Not for anyone else.

Ooh, is that a challenge Paddy?

I totally agree that my control freak statement is contradictory but nicotine is the one thing I can't control, most other things I have a certain control over. I can refuse alcohol/restrict my intake no problem, food, work, even family and friends I can say no to, but those nasty little nicotine sticks just keep me coming back for more.

Nope, getting to sleep isn't a problem as long as I have the radio on in the background, it's getting enough sleep, unfortunately (for me) once I wake I have to get up, no matter what the time is Crying or Very sad

So, I'm a slave to the "resist monster" hmm, not too sure I like the sound of that, I don't like being a slave, I want to be the boss!!! Shocked

Ok Paddy, if you can do it I'm sure that I can give it a damn good try. I am really going to try to give up this year, and rid myself of that little monster once and for all. Nope, lets be positive and say that I AM going to give up.
Correct. My Master Practitioner training immediately followed the practitioner class. I've heard you should wait a couple months in between courses. I will be starting a new job in a few weeks and wouldn't be able to take time off for the master prac for at least another year. My instructors and I talked about it and they allowed me to take the master prac. right after the prac.

I'm still 'catching my breath' from the courses. Wow.

Thank you for the book suggestion. I will be ordering it and a few others from the suggested reading in the back of "Introduction to NLP" by O'Connor.
